Two Small Writing Habits That Protect Your Focus and Momentum

February 20, 20262 min read

Over the years, I’ve noticed something about productivity. It’s usually not a lack of ability that slows us down. It’s a lack of clarity.

When we’re writing, building a project, creating a workshop, or even organizing our next big move, our mind needs direction. Without it, we drift. And drifting leads to procrastination.

Let me share two small habits that have made a big difference for me.

1. Be Specific With Your Action Words

I used to write things like:

  • Plan workshop

  • Research topic

  • Organize notes

But here’s the problem: those words are too broad. There’s no clear finish line. My brain doesn’t know what “done” looks like, so it hesitates.

Now I replace vague verbs with specific ones.

Instead of “plan workshop,” I write:

→ Outline three workshop sections.

Instead of “research,” I write:

→ Find two articles and save links.

Instead of “organize,” I write:

→ Sort top desk drawer.

Specific verbs like list, draft, call, outline, email give your brain a clear directive. Clarity reduces friction. And when friction goes down, action goes up.

2. Write Down Your Thinking Before You Stop

Have you ever paused in the middle of a project and then come back later… only to feel lost?

That’s because when we stop mid-task, we lose the mental model we've built. The context disappears.

So here’s what I do before I close my notebook or shut down my computer:

I write one sentence explaining why I made my last decision.

Just one sentence.

That small step preserves my logic. It keeps the thread of thought intact. When I return, I don’t have to relearn my own project.

Momentum is fragile. But it’s also protectable.

These two habits, using specific action words and capturing your reasoning before you stop, will keep you moving forward with less frustration and more focus.

Sometimes transformation doesn’t come from working harder. It comes from thinking more clearly.

And clarity is something we can practice every day.
