Choosing Courage Over Comfort

July 19, 2026•3 min read

There comes a time in life when comfort can look like wisdom. We tell ourselves we’ve done enough. We’ve raised families, worked jobs, helped others, survived hard times, and carried responsibilities nobody applauded. We convince ourselves it is easier to stay where we are because starting something new takes energy, faith, and courage. And no one cares about us.

But sometimes comfort isn’t peace. It can be wearing familiar clothes. And if no one cares about us, it’s because we’ve made ourselves invisible.

As a woman way over 50, I understand how easy it is to settle into a routine and believe my best years are behind me. I know how it feels to wonder if my voice still makes a difference in rooms that seem faster and younger. It used to hurt to feel like the world had moved on without me.

But I also knew this: I wasn’t finished. And neither are you.

We have wisdom in us. Stories in us to be shared. I still have dreams waiting for me to stop making excuses and start making moves. And I’m betting you still have dreams, too.

Choosing courage over comfort doesn’t mean we have to change everything overnight. It only means we decide that convenience will no longer control our future. We will stop shrinking our dreams to fit the expectations of people who stopped dreaming for themselves.

Courage may look like writing the first page. Recording the first video. Joining a class. Starting a business. Asking for help. Speaking up. Going back to church, school, writing, art, coaching, ministry, or whatever dream has been tapping on our shoulder.

Courage may look small to someone else, but to us, it can feel like crossing a bridge we have avoided for years.

Here are three things we can do when we’re ready to choose courage over comfort.

1. Name the dream we keep pushing away.

Sometimes we say we don’t know what we want, but deep down, we do. We have simply talked ourselves out of it so many times that the dream sounds distant. Write it down. Say it clearly; stop pretending it doesn’t mean anything.

2. Take one visible step.

Courage grows when we take action. Make that 500-pound phone call. When we post that announcement. Go register for that class you always wanted to take. Share a story or experience that could help someone. Don’t be afraid to ask someone to support your project. A visible step makes people notice, and the dream real.

3. Build a circle that expects growth from us.

We need people who don’t let us disappear into comfort. Find people who ask, “Did you write it? Did you start? Did you finish? Did you try?” People who become friends and want to see you succeed. Be aware of people who try to shame us and remind us that we are better off doing nothing than doing what we want.

I believe many of us women over 50 aren’t tired of dreaming. We’re just tired of doubting ourselves. Of waiting for our dreams to become a reality. Personally, I grew tired of acting as if I had nothing left to offer.

Comfort may feel safe, but courage opens doors. It gives us movement, reminds us that our age is not a stop sign.

I am choosing courage over comfort because I still have work to do, stories to tell, women to encourage, and dreams to build. And if you are reading this, maybe you do too.

So let this be our reminder: we aren’t forgotten, we’re not finished, and we aren’t too old to make a difference in this world.

Now, I want you to choose courage, begin again.

We have the ability to become unstuck and unstoppable.
