The Courage to Be a Beginner Again
It is scary becoming a beginner again.
When we are younger, people expect us to learn, try, stumble, and figure things out as we go. But when we get older, there is often an unspoken expectation that we should already know everything. We’re supposed to have it all together. Be comfortable with what we know and stay in that lane. I don’t know about you, but I am always looking to learn something new, so it’s difficult to stay in that lane.
However, dreams don’t always stay in the lane we built years ago. A new dream shows up and asks us to learn something unfamiliar. It can feel exciting and intimidating at the same time. I know because I started a new YouTube channel, and an online eBook store is scary.
Starting a YouTube channel, launching an online eBook store, learning new technology, building a new audience, writing a new book, or sharing our voice in a new way can make us feel like we are back at the beginning.
It requires courage. It takes courage to admit, “I don’t know how to do this yet.”
You have to ask questions, make mistakes that others can see, and keep going when the process feels awkward, slow, or confusing.
But being a beginner does not mean we are starting with nothing. We bring our years, our wisdom, our lessons, our faith, our creativity, and our life experience with us.
We may be new to various platforms and need to learn new processes and technologies. But we aren’t new to surviving hard things. We’ve learned ways to problem-solve, and we show up when life changes, no matter how difficult they are.
I think that’s what being a beginner again makes us powerful. It reminds us that growth can still happen. Our story is still being written. We don’t have to let our age cancel our purpose, creativity, or vision. I remind myself of this often.
Every new goal brings a learning curve, and every new chapter requires a different level of courage. I’ve had moments when I wondered if I was moving too slowly or if I should have started sooner. But then I remember this: starting later is still starting.
Each time you try again is still progress, and learning something new is always a victory.
We don’t have to master everything on the first day. We don’t have to have every answer before we begin. What we need is the courage to take the next step, learn the next lesson, and keep going until the unfamiliar becomes familiar.
That’s how confidence grows, by moving forward while we are still learning.
So, if you’re stepping into something new, don’t be ashamed of being a beginner. Celebrate it. It means you’re still growing. You’re dreaming, and you’re willing to believe there is more ahead.
There’s dignity in experience, and courage in starting over. There is so much power in deciding that your age, your past, or your fear will not have the final word. At my age, I have fears, but I’m following my dream anyway.
I want you to be willing to be a beginner again. It could be the very step that moves you from stuck to unstoppable.
