When Life Happens Instead of the New Year You Planned

April 15, 20262 min read

We step into a new year with expectations. We hope for open doors, fresh opportunities, and better days. We tell ourselves this year will be different. This year will be better.

Then life happens.

Sometimes it happens in a way that shakes everything. It changes your focus, your energy, and even your sense of direction. Instead of walking forward with excitement, you find yourself trying to recover from one blow after another.

That is where I am right now.

Near the end of the first quarter of this year, I lost my son. At the start of this second quarter, I lost my sister. The losses came so close together that I am still trying to process my own grief while also trying to console my nieces. I am doing what I can to keep myself from falling into depression, even as I read my Bible and lean on my faith.

I know many people can relate to this in their own way. Your year may not have begun with loss, but it began with something painful, disappointing, or unexpected. You thought this year would bring momentum, and instead it brought sorrow. The year for you started out in reverse.

So what can we do when life takes a turn we never planned for?

We can start by accepting the truth of where we are. We don’t have to pretend we are stronger than we are. Or act like we are untouched. Pain is real, and grief is real. Telling the truth is part of the healing process.

Let’s stop assuming that a bad beginning means a bad ending. I believe a rough beginning can lead to a great ending. I believe God is still working, even in the middle of heartbreak.

We can return to the basics that help us hold on. Prayer, Scripture, Writing, Honest conversations, a walk outside, and drinking water matter. Really, the small things are not small at all. They’re what keep us standing.

We can also give ourselves permission to ask for help. There is nothing wrong with needing support. Hard seasons were never meant to be carried alone.

And we can choose hope, even if it is one quiet step at a time.

If your year started out in the reverse of what you expected, please remember this: the year is not over, and your story is not finished. You may be hurting, but you are still here. You may be grieving, but there is still purpose ahead.

Take it one day, one prayer, one page, and one breath of faith at a time.

A rough beginning does not cancel the possibility of a beautiful ending.
