Thanksgiving Lives in My Heart
Thanksgiving has always held a special place in my heart. When I close my eyes, I can still smell the memories from my childhood, the turkey roasting in the oven, the sweet potato pie cooling on the counter, and the cakes sitting proudly on the table like they knew they were the stars of the show. Those were the scents that told me, “Baby, it’s Thanksgiving.”
As I grew older and had a family of my own, I wanted to create those same warm memories. So, I became the early riser, the one who tiptoed into the kitchen before sunrise, whispering to the turkey, “Alright now, it’s your big day.” I’d season it, slide it into the oven, and let that slow-cooked aroma drift through the house just like when I was a little girl.
Then came breakfast. My family always woke up to bacon sizzling, eggs popping in the pan, pancakes stacked with butter melting down the sides, and hot chocolate warming the soul. I loved it. Those moments felt like love in action.
The pies and cakes were always baked the day before, because wisdom says don’t stress yourself on Thanksgiving morning. But the potato salad, green beans, corn, rolls, and that good dressing with gravy? Oh, those were prepared fresh on Thanksgiving Day. There’s something sacred about making dressing while listening to your favorite music and talking to the Lord.
When we finally gathered around the table, everyone shared what they were thankful for. The kids were predictable; they were grateful for “the good food.” And me? My heart spoke every time: I’m thankful for my family and for the blessing of being together.
After cleaning up the kitchen, I had my little ritual. I’d grab a good book, fix myself a cup of coffee, and turn on an old western. That was my kind of peace. And let me be clear, I have never done Black Friday. Never. And I still don’t. That’s just not my cup of tea.
But December 1st? The Christmas tree goes up. No negotiation.
These memories stay with me, comforting me year after year. And I hope you’re creating your own Thanksgiving moments, full of love, laughter, good food, and grateful hearts.
May God’s blessings uplift and sustain you always.
Happy Thanksgiving!🧡🍂🙏🏽
