Facing Fear with a Pen in Hand
We all feel it—fear. Sometimes it shows up as a whisper: “What if I’m not good enough?” Other times, it screams: “Don’t you dare take that risk!” Whether it’s fear of failure, rejection, or even success, it can keep us stuck, playing small, and doubting our God-given potential.
But here’s what I’ve learned: fear doesn’t have to be the end of the story. In fact, it can be the beginning of something beautiful—if we choose to face it with courage and curiosity. And one of the gentlest, most powerful tools I’ve found for doing just that is journaling.
When I sit with my journal, I’m not performing or pretending. I’m just being honest. I let the page hold all the things I’m afraid to say out loud. The what-ifs, the why-nots, the “who do you think you are” thoughts. And as I write, something begins to shift.
Journaling doesn’t magically erase fear—but it reveals it. And once fear is out in the open, it loses some of its power. You start to see patterns. You recognize lies. You hear your own voice rising up to say, “Wait a minute… maybe I can do this.”
Here’s how you can use your journal to overcome fear:
1. Name the fear. Don’t sugarcoat it. Write it down like it is: “I’m afraid of being seen. I’m afraid I’ll fail.” Be bold and tell the truth.
2. Ask “why?” Where is that fear coming from? Childhood memories? A past failure? A harsh word? Dig deeper.
3. Write back to the fear. I often say, “Dear Fear, thank you for trying to protect me. But I’m doing this anyway.” It’s empowering to speak back to what’s been silencing you.
4. Record moments of courage. Every little win—big or small—belongs in your journal. Over time, it becomes a testimony to your growth.
Friend, your journal isn’t just a notebook—it’s a mirror, a sanctuary, a launching pad. So next time fear tries to freeze you, don’t run. Sit. Write. And let the healing begin.
